Health and Safety responsibilities, do they apply to me?

Under current legislation the Health & Safety Laws and Regulations requires that:

  • Employers with five or more employees must have a written health and safety policy.
  • All employers have to assess the risks from their work activities. If they have five or more employees they have to record the significant findings of their risk assessment.
  • Self-employed people are also required to assess the risks from their work activities.
  • Employers have to provide health and safety training for all employees.

Health and Safety audits, do I need one?

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have produced a guidance document entitled “Successful Health and Safety Management” (HSG65). This document provides advice on how health and safety should be managed, in large organisations particularly. A key element covered is audit. It stresses the importance of auditing the organisation to ensure that its safety management system is maintained and is not declining. The advice given in HSG65 will be used by the HSE inspectors when checking an organisation’s arrangements for managing health and safety.

Having its own audits also enables a company to satisfy itself that their own Health and Safety Policy requirements are being implemented.
